8.3 Cell Communication (new right hand page)

Learning Objective: I can describe how cells communicate and coordinate activities.

-Cells depend on the activities of other cells to survive, so communication between cells is critical.

-Cells use various methods of communication depending on whether the target is nearby or far away.

-Neighboring cells communicate over short distances through direct contact with their membranes.

-Long distance signals are carried by hormones & nerve cells

-Some signals come from the environment, outside the body. For example, light effects the action of hormones in plants and determines when some flower.

-Receptor proteins in the cell membrane receive hundreds of signals, but respond to only those important to its function.

Mimosa pudica is a creeping annual or perennial herb of the pea family Fabaceae often grown for its curiosity value: the compound leaves fold inward and droop when touched or shaken, defending themselves from harm, and re-open a few minutes later.
